Abstract: The main aim of the present study is to explore teachers’ understandings of learner autonomy. It seeks to uncover how EFL teachers at the department of English, University Abderrahmane Mira, Bejaia, view the process of language learning, the learners’ roles, their own roles and their practices to promote learner autonomy. For this aim, a questionnaire is designed and administered to the teachers at the department of English. In addition, an interview is conducted with some teachers for the sake of clarifying certain issues of some of the teachers’ answers in the questionnaire
